abstract = "A very important physical parameter of a lake or reservoir is its
surface temperature. Among other uses, it is a fundamental
parameter to calculate the surface energy flux that controls the
water temperature and vertical and horizontal stratifications. One
way of obtaining the surface temperature is to install in the
water body a floating platform collecting this data (among other
ones). A severe limitation of such approach is that the data is a
point data, and normally one is not sure about its validity for
other regions of the lake. To fill this data gap a good option is
to use satellite thermal infrared data images. The limitation in
this case is the coarse spatial resolution. In this paper we
explore the possibility of using remote sensing thermal data of
the MODIS and LANDSAT 8 together with an in situ data for the
Furnas hydroelectric reservoir in Brazil. The MODIS data due to
its 1km resolution was mostly used to assess the temporal
variability of the surface lake temperature; due to its good
quality control, it was also used as a control to the LANDSAT 8
temperature. The Landsat 8 thermal data at a resolution of 100m
was used to assess the spatial variability of the surface
                         temperature field.",
